Basic Calcium Phosphate Deposition Disease

HIDE

0:00

<v ->We're gonna move on now

0:02

to the third of the crystal deposition diseases

0:05

and that is what I call basic calcium phosphate,

0:08

BCP deposition disease.

0:11

Now I know many of you think of this

0:13

as calcium hydroxyapatite deposition disease,

0:17

and you may abbreviate that H-A-D-D, or HADD,

0:22

all right?

0:23

So we look at the spectrum of abnormalities

0:25

that can be seen with basic calcium phosphate disease.

0:30

We can see calcific periarthritis,

0:33

often seen as tendon calcification.

0:37

We can see tumor like deposits of calcium,

0:39

we call that tumoral calcinosis.

0:42

And then as I'll talk about at the very end of this segment,

0:45

we can see a destructive arthropathy

0:48

that goes by a variety of names.

0:51

One important point that I wanna make,

0:55

although most people including myself,

0:58

talk about calcium hydroxyapatite deposition

1:01

when we see calcific tendonitis.

1:04

In some articles, it's been proven,

1:06

it is not HADD, but it is carbonate apatite

1:11

that in fact causes calcific tendonitis

1:14

in the majority of cases.
