Subligamentous and Peritendinous Bursa

HIDE
PrevNext

0:00

<v ->Subligamentous Bursae can be found

0:03

in certain anatomic sites in the human skeleton.

0:06

This is an interesting one.

0:09

It is not uncommon to see a small collection

0:12

of fluid between the fibular collateral ligament

0:15

and the popliteus tendon just adjacent

0:17

to the lateral femoral condyle.

0:19

And here's one example of what that looks like.

0:22

In the few cases which I've seen this

0:25

where the fluid has become even more prominent than this,

0:29

symptoms were not related to bursitis.

0:33

Now, I'm gonna spend a little bit more time talking

0:37

about bursa that are located near tendons.

0:42

And I'm gonna divide that into those bursa

0:44

that are paratendinous and those that are peritendinous.

0:49

One of my favorite bursa that I like to talk about

0:52

is a paratendinous bursa.

0:53

This is the retrocalcaneal bursa.

0:56

Think of this as a sagittal section

0:59

of the calcaneus and Achilles tendon.

1:01

This is next to the Achilles tendon.

1:04

Hence, it as a paratendinous bursa.

1:06

Another interesting site is gonna be

1:10

in the volar aspect of the wrist.

1:12

And here we have tendons that actually pass through

1:15

bursal sacks, we'll call that type of phenomenon

1:19

a peritendinous bursa.

1:22

So let's look at sites in which we see

1:25

bursa that are intimate with tendons.

1:28

And if you create a list, which I've done here,

1:31

and it's not complete but it's close to complete.

1:34

You'll see that most of these are located

1:37

in the lower extremity and only a couple at the very top

1:40

are located in the upper extremity.

1:43

The point I'm making is bursal sacks

1:46

are commonly intimate with tendons,

1:49

particularly at their attachment sites.
