Intraligamentous Bursae

<v ->With regard to intraligamentous bursae,

0:03

let me show you a couple of interesting examples.

0:06

This is an example of the medial collateral ligament bursa,

0:10

and in fact, it's four examples

0:11

of the types of abnormalities you may see.

0:15

Now it is not uncommon to see small collections of fluid

0:18

in this particular location,

0:20

and generally those collections are asymptomatic.

0:25

This bursa may have one continuous cavity

0:30

or have several cavities arranged segmentally.

0:34

So the fluid may be discontinuous within the bursa.

0:38

The bursa is located between the superficial

0:41

and deep portion of the medial supporting structures.

0:46

There are increased amounts of bursal fluid here

0:49

when you're dealing with injuries

0:51

involving the medial supporting structures.

0:56

Another interesting place

0:58

in which we see intraligamentous bursa

1:00

are between the spinous processes throughout the spine.

1:06

Here, taken from an article

1:07

that we wrote years and years ago,

1:09

we're showing you the location, in this sagittal section,

1:13

of the bursa between these spinous processes.

1:17

This is a rather common site

1:20

for calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition,

1:24

and you'll note in this particular specimen radiograph

1:27

we can see also calcification pyrophosphate

1:31

within the intervertebral discs.

1:33

I'll talk more about that phenomenon in a later lecture.

1:37

One of the interesting diseases

1:39

that occurs in this location,

1:41

that is associated with interspinous bursitis

1:44

is known as Baastrup's Disease,

1:47

resulting in enlargement of the spinous processes

1:50

and contact between them, as shown in that those images.
