Hello everybody.
0:01
My name is Dave uim
0:03
and I am the co course director with my wife Kelly uim
0:07
for the course on Medical-Legal Primer for radiologists.
0:11
Welcome to part one. In Part one.
0:15
We're going to look at the process prior
0:17
to being named in a suit, and that is preparation
0:21
and prevention.
0:23
These are my disclosures.
0:25
I do have several books by Elsevier
0:27
and I am a medical-legal expert witness.
0:30
And of course, I'm speaking here for modality
0:32
for which I am one of the consultants.
0:34
Much of the material about litigation is contained in our
0:38
book that was published
0:40
by Elsevier on Radiology business Practice, how to Succeed.
0:44
And there are a couple chapters on medical-legal process.
0:49
So in part one, we are going to talk about detection
0:52
and interpretation errors
0:53
and why they happen with one of the country's experts.
0:56
On this, Michael Bruno, we'll talk about how
1:00
to prevent being sued
1:01
and what practices you can employ
1:04
to reduce your chance of being sued.
1:07
And then we will talk a little bit about your malpractice
1:10
insurance and what you should know about it, so
1:12
that way if you are sued, you're still safe.
1:17
So our goals
1:19
and objectives are for you to understand why we make
1:23
mistakes and accept the fact that there are going
1:25
to be detection and interpretation errors throughout your
1:28
career to provide strategies for minimizing those mistakes,
1:34
and then give an elementary take on your malpractice
1:38
insurance policy and what the pearls
1:41
and pitfalls are for having the appropriate coverage.
1:45
So as I said, my name is Dave Usam.
1:47
I'm one faculty at Johns Hopkins University School
1:50
of Medicine within the Department of Radiology.
1:52
I've been in practice for 35 years, limited
1:55
to academic practice.
1:57
I certainly have made lots
1:58
and lots of mistakes over those 35 years.
2:01
However, I've only been named in one lawsuit,
2:04
and that was as a fellow when I was dropped immediately.
2:08
I've been an expert witness for dozens of cases
2:13
and both for plaintiff as well as defense,
2:16
and I've had hundreds of conversations with my wife
2:19
who you're going to meet now.
2:22
So Kelly is the course director's director
2:25
and she is a medical malpractice lawyer.
2:28
She's been in practice for 35 years.
2:30
Initially she was a prosecutor in the state of Ohio
2:34
looking at, uh, child abuse cases.
2:37
Then she went over to the defense side
2:39
for personal liability and personal injury cases.
2:43
And then over the most recent 20 years,
2:45
she's been a plaintiff malpractice lawyer in Colorado
2:49
and has reviewed thousands of cases, taken dozens of cases
2:53
to court, had lots of personal experiences
2:56
and lots of dinner conversations with her
2:59
Radiologist husband.
3:01
The other speaker that we'll be talking to
3:04
and in this portion of the course is Michael Bruno.
3:07
Michael is a professor of radiology medicine
3:09
and vice Chair for Quality and Patient Safety,
3:12
and the chief of the Division
3:13
of Emergency Radiology at Penn State,
3:16
Milton s Hershey Medical Center.
3:18
And as you can see, Michael has many, many articles about
3:24
why we make errors and the different type of errors
3:26
and what you might do to mitigate those errors
3:28
and to learn from our mistakes.
