Congenital Lung Malformations: Summary

HIDE
PrevNext

0:00

In summary, when we think

0:02

of congenital lung malformations,

0:04

although many of these entities can have overlapping imaging

0:07

features, there are some

0:08

that can help us try to distinguish them.

0:12

If we're thinking about congenital lobar over inflation,

0:15

pay attention to whether the lesion looks like hyper

0:18

expanded lung tissue with widely spaced

0:21

bronchovascular bundles.

0:23

And then thinking about bronchial atresia in particular,

0:26

look for an eretic bronchus

0:28

with a possible associated bronchae or mucosal.

0:32

If we're thinking about the foregut duplication cysts,

0:35

in particular, we discussed esophageal

0:37

and bronchogenic, remember

0:39

that we can find these cystic foci in the mediastinum

0:42

or mediastinal regions.

0:45

If we're thinking about congenital pulmonary airway

0:47

malformations look for bronchial communication.

0:51

Whereas for broncho pulmonary sequestration, we don't expect

0:56

to see bronchial communication,

0:58

but we do typically expect to see systemic arterial supply.

1:02

Remember, however, these entities can have a lot

1:06

of overlap in their imaging features, likely due to the fact

1:09

that they have most likely a common origin,

1:12

so there can be quite a bit of similar features

1:16

that make it difficult to distinguish all of them.

1:20

Additionally, the forge duplication cysts can also be seen

1:23

in conjunction with these entities,

1:25

so it can be a bit confusing,

1:27

but hopefully you have some tools to try to be able

1:30

to distinguish these when they are present.
