Common Source of Radiology Malpractice - Detection Misses

0:00

So in talking just about radiology,

0:04

what are the common malpractice allegations

0:06

that we are used to seeing?

0:09

Of course, one of our biggest area is misdiagnosis

0:14

or misinterpretation.

0:15

A crucial finding is missed,

0:17

and that can lead to a bad outcome for a patient.

0:21

And I'll, I'll, I'll share some examples.

0:24

Over the years, having done, uh, a fair number

0:27

of these cases and looking at the literature,

0:31

these are the four areas that lead

0:35

to the maximum number of, uh,

0:39

mal practice cases in a radiology, oncology,

0:44

vascular events missing, uh, aneurysms, missing

0:48

dissections is, is pretty common.

0:52

Fractures is still very, very big in, uh,

0:55

in, in, in radiology.

0:56

And of course, infections that I have been involved with.

1:00

Uh, I would say probably maximum number

1:03

of infections are in the spine, missing an epidural abscess,

1:07

missing discitis osteomyelitis

1:09

or infections, uh,

1:11

in the abdominal cavity that are, that are missed.

1:14

So, so this, this gives you an idea that these,

1:17

these are the four areas that you have

1:19

to be particularly very, very careful about.

1:22

As, as these four areas are quite high when it comes

1:26

to radiology, um, uh, malpractice and amongst the cancer.

1:30

As I already previously said, breast

1:33

and lung are very high up on the list.

1:36

A, they're, they're the most common cancers.

1:38

And B, we all know these lung nodules, especially now

1:43

most of us do these, uh, submillimeter scans.

1:47

And these, these lung nodules we sometimes

1:50

completely blow off.

1:51

Unfortunately, there have been examples, uh,

1:54

where they turn out to be lung cancers, uh, a year, year

1:57

and a half from the initial, uh, scan.

2:01

And, uh, sometimes really unfortunate.
