How is CT utilized both in the US and around the world?

I just want to share two slides. Before that, I also want to

share with you the type of CTs done in the US

The majority of the CT done in the clinic falls under what

is called as head, chest, abdomen, and pelvic.

Nearly 76% of all the CTs done in the

US falls into this head, chest, abdomen, pelvic.

From a medical physicist point of view, this is very important for us to know

because if we are developing new method to optimize these

patient CT protocols, we want to start with the

most widely used protocols so that the impact can be

felt to a larger population. That's the idea.

You can see here cardiac CT were beginning to show up on the national scale about

1% to 3%. There's a lot more room for development of the new technology.

developed, we saw the number of CT procedure done in the US is close

And now, as of last year, it is running up to close to 100 million CT

The reason why the CT is done more, it is also has got sort of

lot of negative feedback because of the radiation dose associated with

CT. However, the last 15 years, the

technology has been further developed to optimize the CT

radiation dose, which I'm going to discuss later.

So this is the general idea of the number of procedures done.

How does that translate to the global population?

Again, this is a comparison to see how the CT has

penetrated not only in the developed countries but in developing

countries, too.

We have published a paper based on the numbers done in 2006,

comparing with 2016 data.

What we've seen is like in 2006, the number of CT procedure

done in the US was about 62 million procedure.

In 2016, we saw about 74 million, about

increase of 20%.

Whereas globally, in 2006, only about

206 million procedures was done, out of which

62 million was done in the US alone.

But we saw a rapid expansion of the CT around the world,

and now that almost saw 100%,

96% change in the last 10 years between 2006

and 2016.

What I want to draw your attention is, in the 2006

CT numbers, US numbers accounted almost 30% of the

global utilization. Now, even though the number is higher,

this accounts to only 18% variation.

There is still lot of difference in the utilization from high to

low-income countries by a factor of almost 13.

There is lot more CT scanners are needed globally for the advances

of the technology, but that's the current status.
