Pott's Puffy Tumor

0:00

Well, in this patient who has frontal sinusitis,

0:04

we can basically make the diagnosis on the scout image.

0:08

You notice that there is this soft tissue bump here

0:12

superficial to the frontal sinusitis, so we would

0:15

expect that there may be an inflammatory collection

0:19

superficial to the bone here, and that is what we

0:22

typically see in a patient who has Pott's puffy tumor.

0:26

The Pott is, I think, related to Gordon

0:28

Pott, who was a head and neck radiologist

0:32

from the early 1970s and 1980s.

0:36

So indeed, on this case, what we see is a low

0:39

density collection superficial to the calvarium,

0:43

which is associated with the opacification of the

0:47

frontal sinus, which— Let me convert this to a

0:50

2 on 1, and now you can look at the frontal sinus,

0:54

and you can see that there is opacification here.

0:56

Oops.

0:57

A little defect in the bone where there is

1:01

transmission of the infection into the scalp.

1:04

We want to be very careful to look

1:07

superficially here to see where there's

1:10

a collection in the epidural space.

1:13

In this case, what we see is encephalomalacia of

1:15

the gyrus rectus region, which may be most typically

1:19

seen in a patient who has had previous trauma.

1:21

So maybe this patient had trauma and had a

1:25

fracture of the frontal bone, which communicated

1:28

with the frontal sinus, and maybe that's the

1:31

potential reason why he has this inflammatory

1:34

collection associated with the frontal sinusitis.

1:37

So maybe a predisposition. On the sagittal,

1:40

we can again see that collection that

1:43

we saw on the scout image, and this is

1:46

what is referred to as Pott's puffy tumor.
