Non-Visceral Structures of the Abdomen - Retroperitoneum

0:00

So let's talk about the Retro peritoneum.

0:03

The Retro peritoneum is the region of the abdomen located posteriorly to

0:06

the peritoneal cavity its contents. We're

0:09

thinking about the adrenal glands the order and

0:12

the IBC which we see in the middle of the screen the duodenum

0:15

the second and third portion specifically and

0:18

then the organ of note that sort

0:21

of a little bit of a Lone Ranger is the pancreas that also

0:24

sits here. We have the ureters. We have

0:27

parts of the GI tract that include

0:30

in addition to the second and third portions of

0:33

the door. We have the ascending in descending portions

0:36

of the cold and as well as in the thorax, we

0:39

have the esophagus and then in the pelvis we

0:42

have the rectum.

0:43

Now the retroperating organ that's really the dominant

0:46

players the kidneys, of course, we mentioned the ureters being

0:49

a portion of that and the super renal glands the

0:52

adrenal glands sitting on top of that but the kidneys are the star of the

0:55

show when it comes to the retroperitoneal compartment.

0:58

So there are three divisions the anterior power renal space the posterior

1:01

power rental space and the peruvino space.

1:05

Let's talk about the anterior parallel space so that we can Define our

1:08

territory and to really what do

1:11

we have here? We have the parietal peritoneum.

1:15

Posteriorly we have the anterior renal

1:18

fascia. And then laterally we have

1:21

the lateral count of fashion. Okay, and we have the organs

1:24

that we discussed previously ascending and descending

1:27

portions of the colon.

1:29

pancreas in that nice anterior power renal space

1:33

So when we think about the posterior power renal space we want

1:36

to mark that out again.

1:37

Here in similar fashion. We have anteriorly the

1:40

posterior Reno and

1:43

lateral carnal fascia.

1:45

And then we have posteriorly we have

1:48

the transverse salads fascia in

1:51

this opens inferiorly to the

1:54

pelvis.

1:55

So when we think about the contents, it's actually typically rachapiritual

1:58

fat.

2:00

So when we think about the Perino space now, this is where

2:03

we would find Perino fat and this is a

2:06

space between the renal capsule and the renal

2:09

fascia. And anteriorly. The renal fascia

2:12

is often known as charodis fascia and posteriorly

2:15

often known as Zucker candles

2:18

fashion.

2:20

And what do we find here again? The star of the show the

2:23

kidneys and of course the ureters that drain from the

2:26

kidneys and that little organ that sits

2:29

on top of each kidney known as the adrenal glands or super renal

2:32

glands.
