Tips for Financial Considerations

0:01

So as, um, with regard to my tips, I would say to charge

0:05

by the study, not necessarily by the hour.

0:07

Obviously at deposition

0:08

and trial testimony, you probably do wanna charge

0:11

by the time period, uh, obtain a retainer

0:16

for when the trial testimony

0:18

and deposition testimony is scheduled,

0:21

particularly if you're gonna have to ask for

0:23

that day off from work.

0:25

Because a vacation day has a lot of value to me personally.

0:29

Keep track of your invoices and payments.

0:32

It's pretty common that opposing counsel

0:34

or your own counsel will ask you how much have you billed

0:38

for this case?

0:40

And what they're trying to show the jury of, of times is

0:44

that you're a greedy bastard and charging all this money,

0:47

and that's why you're showing up at court.

0:51

Um, you have to tell the truth.

0:53

So maintain track of your invoices and payments

0:56

and, um, in addition, I would say keep track

1:02

of all cases in which you do de de depositions

1:06

or trial testimony, um, insofar as whether it's

1:11

for defense or plaintiff.

1:13

So that way you can state definitively, I've

1:16

done 26 cases on behalf of the defense

1:20

and 28 cases on behalf of the plaintiff.

1:23

And by providing that data,

1:25

it makes it look like you are more objective

1:28

and less biased, and don't favor one side versus the other.

1:32

So do keep track of your cases, both your depositions

1:36

as well as your trial testimony.
