Overview of Carotid Ultrasound

0:00

Okay, so let's apply some of these Doppler principles to carotid imaging.

0:04

And this is probably one of the vascular studies that people who are just getting

0:08

into Doppler are going to encounter pretty quickly.

0:12

So what do we assess on a carotid ultrasound?

0:14

Well, we want to identify the common carotid, the carotid bulb, the internal

0:18

carotid, and external carotid arteries, and you have to figure out, well, how do I

0:22

know which one of those I'm looking at?

0:23

Well, the internal carotid artery is not going to have any branches, and the

0:28

waveforms tend to be low resistance, as we mentioned.

0:31

The external carotid artery is going to have branches present because it is

0:35

perfusing all of the skeletal muscles.

0:37

This is going to have a high resistance waveform.

0:39

There's also something called the temporal tap maneuver, which we'll take a look

0:43

at, and that is one of the things that can typically confirm the ECA, although

0:47

there are some times that you will see a temporal tap in an ICA as well, just

0:50

depending on what gets transmitted.

0:52

There's also the vertebral artery that we want to make sure that we're identifying,

0:56

and that has a separate waveform as well.
