<v ->Dr. P here.

0:01

We've got some cool anatomy in front of you,

0:02

but I wanna focus on the symptoms

0:05

of Sports Hernia Syndrome, or Sports Hernia,

0:08

because many people find this an enigmatic diagnosis.

0:11

As we've said before, it's not a true hernia.

0:14

It's not an umbilical hernia, a spigelian hernia,

0:17

a petit's hernia, there's all kinds of hernias,

0:19

including a direct hernia.

0:21

But in this syndrome, there isn't a palpable defect

0:25

with anything going through it.

0:27

It is a weakness due to Repetitive Overuse Syndrome.

0:31

And who gets it?

0:32

Elite, twisting, turning athletes, who generate power.

0:37

Now, what are the symptoms?

0:38

The classic symptom of Sports Hernia is groin pain.

0:43

Now, those of you that do musculoskeletal imaging

0:45

and are musculoskeletal clinicians know that groin pain

0:49

can be caused by a whole host of things,

0:51

like Lumbar Disk Disease.

0:53

It could be caused by a labral tear.

0:56

In fact, I've had innumerable labral tears,

0:58

at least five, that presented as Sports Hernia Syndrome.

1:02

What else do they get?

1:04

Pubic pain.

1:05

Diminished function.

1:07

The inability to generate power, speed, force.

1:12

They also may have symptoms that cross the midline,

1:15

which is rather bizarre and enigmatic to the clinician.

1:19

The pain is usually a dull pain.

1:22

Occasionally it's burning.

1:24

And frequently, that groin pain will extend

1:28

into the inner thigh or the scrotum.

1:30

And then when you do imaging, initially,

1:33

in the hands of a non-expert, it's normal.

1:36

Let's move on.
