Welcome to MRI Online's section on sports hernias.

0:05

First, sports hernia, not a hernia.

0:08

It's a misnomer.

0:10

There is no hole.

0:12

So what is it?

0:13

Sports hernia consists of a muscular imbalance

0:17

that results in a specific clinical syndrome

0:20

that diminishes function.

0:22

So what kind of function?

0:24

The patient has difficulty generating power

0:27

in the core of the body.

0:28

And that includes the anterior,

0:31

upper and lower abdominal areas,

0:33

and hip flexion or hip drive.

0:37

Who gets it? Men.

0:39

The male to female ratio is about 10 to one,

0:42

although that's decreasing

0:43

as women participate in similar sport.

0:47

So what kind of sport does it?

0:49

the sport where your foot is anchored to the ground.

0:51

In other words, you plant it on the ground.

0:53

You're generating abdominal contraction

0:56

and you're twisting or turning.

0:58

Sports like soccer, rugby, American football,

1:03

ice hockey, and the like.

1:05

We even see it in tennis players,

1:07

especially during the serve,

1:09

when they're in extreme extension,

1:11

and then they go into extreme flexion

1:14

with abdominal contraction,

1:15

and as the racket goes across the body, they twist.

1:19

So sports hernia is actually a clinical syndrome.

1:23

It has innumerable imaging manifestations,

1:27

but often the diagnosis

1:29

and how to treat it is based on the imaging.

1:32

We'll take a look in the following vignettes.
