Our next patient is an 18 year old woman with

0:03

a painful palpable lump in the left breast.

0:07

So here's our ultrasound again. This patient presented acutely

0:11

to the adult emergency department and had

0:15

an ultrasound in that department and we

0:18

can see in this patient. There's a

0:21

hypoechoic fluid collection. Just

0:24

under the skin in the left breast at

0:27

the 8 o'clock position in the area where she had the

0:30

tenderness.

0:31

And it's pretty big three and a half centimeters.

0:36

And also vascular rim of

0:39

tissue there.

0:40

And they did a comparison view of a similar area

0:43

of tissue on the right side. You can see there's nothing there

0:46

but on the left side, we've got this.

0:49

Fluid collection Under the Skin and the underlying fat

0:52

lobules are very echogenic.

0:56

And this was felt to represent mastitis with

0:59

an abscess and the patient subsequently underwent

1:02

ultrasound guided drainage of the

1:05

abscess and was placed on antibiotics.

1:09

And the aspirated fluid grew staphylococcus species.

1:12

So this was mastitis with an abscess.
