Introduction to Mammographic-Guided Core Biopsies

0:00

Hello, my name is Julia Birnbaum

0:02

and I am a breast radiologist at the University

0:05

of Pennsylvania, where I have practiced

0:07

for the past 27 years.

0:10

I did a fellowship in women's imaging

0:13

and initially practiced in ultrasound

0:15

as well as breast radiology.

0:17

But for the past nine years have limited my practice solely

0:21

to breast radiology.

0:24

My responsibilities include teaching residents

0:28

and fellows as well as taking care of patients.

0:32

One of my special interests is percutaneous biopsies

0:36

of the breast, um,

0:37

and other procedures that we do in breast radiology.

0:42

And I think that specifically mammographic guided core

0:45

biopsies, although they are initially intimidating,

0:50

are actually fairly easy to perform,

0:52

and all radiologists

0:54

who perform breast procedures should be comfortable

0:57

with this type of procedure.

1:00

For today's talk, uh, we are going

1:02

to cover general considerations for core biopsies

1:05

of the breast, and then specifically

1:08

what are the indications

1:09

for biopsies With mammographic guidance,

1:12

we'll spend some time talking about the two different

1:15

techniques that can be utilized

1:16

during mammographic guided core biopsies,

1:20

and I will mention contrast enhanced mammography.

1:25

We will review challenges specific

1:27

to the technique we are using

1:30

and as well as specific patient challenges

1:33

and some modifications that we can use

1:35

to overcome these challenges.

1:38

Towards the end, we will do one procedure from beginning

1:43

to end, and then I will follow with, uh, some comments

1:48

regarding radiology pathology concordance.

1:53

The goals for today are, uh, to have an understanding

1:56

of mammographic guided core biopsies.

1:58

In general, understand the difference

2:00

between targeting using stereotaxis

2:03

and tomosynthesis to know the typical targets.

2:07

For mammographic guided core biopsies, you should be able

2:10

to troubleshoot challenging cases, understand the importance

2:14

of advanced preparation,

2:16

and understand the basics of radiology pathology correlation

2:20

specifically for mammographic guided core biopsies.
