Introduction to Neonatal Brain Imaging

HIDE

0:00

All right, so we're gonna spend, uh,

0:03

this noon hour talking about a practical approach

0:06

to neonatal brain imaging.

0:07

And I think this is very important

0:09

because I am trained in both adult

0:11

and pediatric neuroradiology.

0:13

But, uh, what you see is

0:14

that you either have a very specialized practice

0:17

of freestanding children's hospital

0:19

or, uh, you have an adult hospital with, you know, a,

0:22

a smaller, uh, kind

0:23

of associated children's hospital, maybe a nicu.

0:26

And so you get some of these, uh, babies that are born

0:30

and occasionally will get imaging.

0:31

And even if they are later to be transferred

0:34

to more specialized center, you do end up being responsible

0:36

for interpreting them.

0:38

So I wanted to provide, just based on my career, some

0:41

of the key insights

0:42

and hopefully make it, uh, simpler for everyone

0:44

to understand from a mechanistic standpoint.

0:48

Okay. So today we will review the general principles

0:51

for neonatal clinical care and imaging.

0:53

I will show classic examples

0:54

of preterm and term brain injury.

0:56

That's what you would see in all the textbooks.

0:58

So I'll try to make it, um,

1:00

a little bit more straightforward, mechanistically.

1:02

And then we're gonna mention a number of special diagnoses

1:06

that have characteristic imaging features,

1:07

things you don't wanna miss, uh, that do have more unique,

1:10

uh, features that can actually help you understand the

1:14

diagnosis.
