Motion Artifact Case Example on Tomosynthesis

0:01

So in this case here, uh, I'm showing, uh, images

0:04

of the right breast in the CC and MLO projection.

0:09

On this exam, uh, we see diffuse round coarse

0:14

heterogeneous calcifications, the right breast

0:16

at 10 o'clock for the middle to posterior depth.

0:18

As we scroll through the, uh, to

0:21

of this image dataset, right?

0:23

We can see those calcifications appear

0:24

in multiple different planes, and

0:27

some of them you might get the sense.

0:30

Stop here.

0:30

That, like, for example, this calcification here,

0:33

uh, we see a little bit of that slinky artifact, but

0:35

it looks like it changes directions that may, might

0:38

make you wonder a little bit about motion artifact.

0:42

We go back to the SM, uh, view.

0:45

We can see those calcifications and we can see

0:46

the corresponding ones in the right MLO view.

0:51

Um, I'm gonna pull up for comparison a more

0:54

recent, um, SM view from the same patient.

0:57

This is about a year later, and we can see

1:00

in this similar part of the breast, outer

1:01

part of the right breast on the CC view.

1:03

There seems to be a lot more

1:04

calcifications in this area.

1:06

I think what has happened here, um, is I don't

1:09

think that these are new calcifications, but

1:11

what we are seeing here on this right CC view

1:13

from before is that motion artifact has obscured

1:17

or removed the calcifications from our view.

1:20

So despite the fact that we felt like we had to

1:21

call this patient back for some potentially new

1:23

or increasing calcifications, that really these

1:26

calcifications were likely related to the fact that

1:28

there was motion artifact in the CC that obscured.
